Fun & Interesting Facts About Easter
Easter Carols
Did you know that there are Easter Carols similar to the ones we sing for Christmas? There are some traditional Latin songs that have been translated into English, but there are even some more modern songs such as ‘Easter Parade’ and ‘Here Comes Peter Cottontail’.
Easter Candy
One of the most popular traditions involved with the Easter holiday is the giving and receiving of Easter baskets. For children, on Easter morning, the Easter Bunny leaves a basket full of treats. The candy inside typically includes chocolate bunnies, candy Easter eggs, and peeps. On average, people in the United States purchase approximately 700 million peeps. Another popular Easter candy treat are jellybeans, which are produced in an amount that would fill an egg that would reach the top of a nine-story building.
An Easter Symbol
The rabbit, or bunny, is one of the most popular symbols of the Easter holiday. The rabbit symbolizes the rebirth of spring because rabbits were once typically recognized as an animal representing fertility and birth. An ancient German tale about a woman leaving eggs for her children to find, and the appearance of a rabbit hopping away from the egg site is linked to our modern take on the Easter Bunny.
Origins of the Easter Egg Hunt
The Easter Egg Hunt is an occasion in which parents typically hide Easter eggs filled with treats for children to find. Historians have traced the tradition back to the medieval period when priests would hold egg-throwing contests. Priests would toss the eggs to choirboys, and whoever held the egg at the stroke of twelve would get to keep the egg.
